ACER USB CDR/W DRIVE

This isn't a laser, flashlight, or other product specifically designed to produce light, but since it uses LEDs for rather important functions, I figured "what the H-E-Double-Bendy-Straws" - I'd probably get eternal darnation if I failed to add it to this website because of those LEDs in it anyway.

This is a device that allows you to access data on CD-ROMs, play music CDs, and write data to rewritable CD-ROMs for your Windows computer.

It writes CD-R (rewriteable CD) data at the "6x" speed, writes CD-RW (rewriteable CD-ROM) data at the "4x" speed, and I honestly do not know what the second "6x" on there indicates.

This external CD-RW drive is actually quite easy to use.

Plug the cord coming from the disk drive into any free USB port on your desktop or laptop computer; and plug the free end into the USB connection on the back of the unit toward the left (there are two receptacles there; this goes in the innermost one) . Plug the smaller plug coming from the power supply "brick" to the receptacle labelled "DC 12V" on the back of the unit at the far left; and plug its thicker cord into any 2- or 3-slot 110 volts to 130 volts AC 60Hz standard (in north America anyway) household receptacle (outlet).

Place the included 3½" floppy diskette into your computer's floppy disk drive.

Click on the START button at the lower left of your display (assuming that you have the taskbar & system tray at the bottom like most Windows users), select "3½ Floppy" by double-clicking on it, and be certain that it looks like this:

From that point, go to your Control Panel, select "Add hardware", and follow the prompts.

When asked about the driver, select "Choose specific location", type "A:\Win98&2000", and continue to follow the prompts.

To use the product, press the button labelled "OPEN/CLOSE" on the front of the unit on the far right side. The CD tray will then deploy.
Place a CD-ROM, CD-RW disc, or audio CD in the tray, shiny side-down, and press the "OPEN/CLOSE" button again to retract the CD tray.

If your computer is set to "auto play", the CD-ROM will then automatically start, or the music CD will begin playing from track 01.

If you just want to play a music CD from the unit, you need not even have it connected to a computer. Load a music CD as directed above, plug a pair of earphones into the female 1/8th inch stereo phone receptacle labelled "PHONES", and press the button labelled "PLAY/SKIP" on the front of the unit. The CD will begin playing at track 01. To skip to the next song, press & release the "PLAY/SKIP" button. To stop playback, press the "OPEN/CLOSE" button once; press it a second time to eject the disc. The volume control for audio CD playback is located directly to the right of the earphones receptacle.

This unit derives all of the power it requires from AC "house current", so I do not have to tell you which part to remove, gently place on the floor, push with your foot down the basement stairs to a room crawling with hundreds or even thousands of piss ants that have to go to the bathroom, and then rather emphatically tell you not to.

Unable to measure current usage due to how the product was constructed.

The Acer USB CDR/W Drive is designed to be a computer peripheral, not a flashlight meant to be carried around, thrashed, and abused; so I won't try to drown it in the toliet tank, bash it against a steel rod or against the concrete floor of a front porch, let my mother's big dog's ghost or my sister's kitty cats spring a leak (uranate) on it, run over it with a 450lb Celebrity motorised wheelchair, stomp on it, use a medium or large ball peen hammer in order to bash it open to check it for candiosity, fire it from the cannoñata, drop it down the top of Mt. Erupto (I guess I've been watching the TV program "Viva Piñata" too much again - candiosity is usually checked with a laser-type device on a platform with a large readout (located at Piñata Central {aka. "Party Central"}), with a handheld wand that Langston Lickatoad uses, or with a pack-of-cards-sized device that Fergy Fudgehog uses; the cannoñata (also located at Piñata Central) is only used to shoot piñatas to piñata parties away from picturesque Piñata Island, and Mt. Erupto is an active volcano on Piñata Island), send it to the Daystrom Institute for additional analysis, or perform other indecencies on it that a flashlight might have to have performed on it. So this section of the web page will be ***SIGNIFICANTLY*** more bare than this section of the web page on a page about a flashlight.

In fact, the spectrographic analyses, the video clips, and the audio (sound) clip directly below may very well be it.

Video clip on YourTube showing how the unit plays audio CDs without the need for a computer connection.
The song "Dirty Wash" by Don Henley was used.
YourTube disabled the audio, so I guess this is just a big f*****g waste.

This clip is approximately 29.155558358901 megabytes (29,325,014 bytes) in length; dial-up users please be aware.
It will take no less than one hundred forty six (!) minutes to load at 48.0Kbps.

.WAV audio (sound) file that YourTube removed.

This clip is approximately 1.316456877649 megabytes (1,42,4391 bytes) in length; dial-up users please be aware.
It will take no less than seven minutes to load at 48.0Kbps.

Another video clip on YourTube showing how the unit plays audio CDs without the need for a computer connection.
The song "I'm Eighteen" by Anthrax was used.
YourTube blocked the video in Germany.

This clip is approximately 28.488453425845 megabytes (28,619,798 bytes) in length; dial-up users please be aware.
It will take no less than one hundred forty two (!) minutes to load at 48.0Kbps.

I cannot provide either one in other formats, so please do not ask.

TEST NOTES:
Product was given to me by my stepmother in mid-2009.

Product was made in Taiwan.
A product's country of origin really does matter to some people, which is why I published it on this web page.

Unit has failed (the USB part anyway -- it still plays audio CDs as a stand-alone product) since receiving it, so that dreadful "Failed or was destroyed during/after testing" icon will be used at once.
