This 375nm UVA LED Flashlight, sold by Advancedmart, does not have a formal name that I know of, so I'll just call it a "flashlight" on this web page.

It comes in an aluminum body, has a high-powered (3 watt) UVA (ultraviolet-A) LED in its bezel (head), uses two CR123A lithium camera cells for power, and has a rubbery pushbutton on/off switch on its tailcap.

The batteries (two CR123A lithium camera cells) are not included, so you need to go out and purchase them or have some on hand before you can use this light.

The UVA ("ultraviolet type A" or "longwave ultraviolet") radiation emitted by this product is useful in many ways. Let's just name a few of them off from memory.
  • Detecting uranation, sperm, perspiration, saliva, or other bodily fluids on fabrics
  • Detecting repairs of antique glass articles -- repairs will "glow"
  • Determining where Fido was bad
  • Activation of fluorescent inks/dyes (such as "blacklight" posters)
  • Charging glow-in-the-dark fishing bait -- charging *ANY* glow-in-the-dark material actually
  • Checking money, credit card and ID cards for security features only visible under UVA radiation
* = Flashlight body is made by UltraFire (it's their WF-501B); I do not yet know how or where the modification to the high-powered UVA LED takes place.

To use this flashlight, feed it first (see directly below), and then you can go to town.

Press the button on the tailcap until it clicks and then release it to turn the flashlight on.

Yes, it really is as easy as that.

There is no momentary or signalling mode available when the flashlight is off, however, you can blink the flashlight while it is on by partially depressing the button. If you don't mind the backward or reverse feeling of this, you can blink the flashlight this way.



To change the batteries, unscrew and remove the tailcap, throw it to the ground, and stomp on it with old or used bowling shoes...O WAIT!!! YOU'LL NEED THAT!!! So just set it aside instead.

Tip the two used CR123A cells out of the barrel and into your hand, and dispose of or recycle them as you see fit.

Insert two new CR123A cells into the barrel, orienting them both so that their nipple-ends (+) positives go in first.

Finally, screw the tailcap firmly back on.
Aren't you glad you didn't stomp on that tailcap now?

Current usage measures 250.10mA on my DMM's 400mA scale.

I only unscrewed the reflector from the heavy brass part that the LED lives in; no Locktight or other sealant was used on these threads. I cannot disassemble it any farther simply because this flashlight does not belong to me.

The flashlight appears to be reasonably sturdy. Ordinary flashlight accidents should not be enough to do it in. However, since this is a loaner, I will not perform the more abusive testing on it.

There is a wide band of knurling (diamond-shaped texturising) milled into the barrel, and some longitudinal fluting on both the bezel and tailcap, so retention (the ability to hold onto the flashlight when your hands are cold, wet, or oily) shouldn't be much of an issue.


This evaluation look an awful lot like the one I wrote for this product?
Thought you'd say so.
That's because the products are functionally identical; differing only in wavelength, so I was able to use its evaluation as a template for this one.

TEST NOTES:
Test unit of this plus one other UVA flashlight was sent by J.W. of Advancedmart on 03-10-10, and was received on the afternoon of 04-19-10. The units had a long initial lead time, which is why the two dates shown here are so far apart. I was fully expecting the lead time -- no surprises there.

Product (the flashlight host body anyway) was manufactured in China.
