The HappyLight® Deluxe Sunshine Supplement Light System (hereinafter, probably just called the "HappyLight® Deluxe") is a special light used for treating S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder), which can happen in the winter months when the body does not receive sufficient natural sunlight.
You simply set it somewhere where you're working or doing crafts or what have you, and let it work its magic...well, OK, perhaps "magic" is not the correct term to use here, because there is long-standing scientific evidence that this type of light therapy really does work -- so please don't be so quick to poo-poo it.
It uses a pair of special fluorescent light bulbs, and emits absolutely ***NO*** UV radiation (yes, this was spectrographically verified!) so it is absolutely safe for skin and eyes.
Paraphrased from the web page on Verilux's website about the HappyLight® Deluxe, comes this:
Winter blues (the "S.A.D." linked to above) is a condition caused by the seasonal change in the amount of available sunlight. People who suffer from this mood disorder experience normal health throughout most of the year, but experience fatigue and low energy symptoms in the darker winter months.
Some people experience a serious mood change when the seasons change or when they find themselves deprived of natural daylight. Loss of natural light can be the result of long winters, rainy weather, night shift work, airplane travel and subsequent jet lag, or just a lifestyle that dictates too much time indoors. Symptoms of winter blues, or winter depression, are sluggishness, sleep problems, memory loss, the inability to concentrate and loss of mental acuity.
Scientific study has shown the effects of light on the body are more than psychological. Sunlight prompts our systems to produce the hormones directly responsible for improving mood and creating a sense of well-being. The HappyLight line of sunshine supplement systems provides supplemental Natural Spectrum® light when sunlight is unavailable to prompt the body’s natural energy enhancers to help you relax, focus and feel revitalized.
SIZE
To use your shiny new (or corroded old ) HappyLight® Deluxe, just set it where you'll be working (or doing crafts, sewing, knitting, etc.) -- positioning it somewhat off to the side so you aren't simply staring directly into it, plug its plug into any standard (in north America annyway) 110 volts to 130 volts AC 60Hz 3-slot grounded household AC receptacle, and turn it on by rocking that rocker switch on the upper edge of the unit to the "ON" position.
The recommended "on" time per day will vary depending on how close you are to the unit.
For a distance of 27", leave the unit on for ~2 hours.
For a distance of 18", leave the unit on for ~1 hour.
For a distance of 9", leave the unit on for ~30 minutes (½ an hour).
The HappyLight® Deluxe comes with a tilt bail on the back so you can easily stand it up on a desk; it also comes equipped with a wood screw & drywall insert (in a seperate baggie) so that the unit may be hung from a wall if desired.
This product is AC-powered, so I don't have to tell you which part to remove, huck into an open-pit copper or gadolinium mine so that a heavy piece of machinery will take it out & "destruct" it, and then rather emphatically tell you not to.
This is a product for treating S.A.D., not a flashlight meant to be bashed, thrashed, trashed, and abused; so I won't throw it against the wall, stomp on it, try to drown it in the toylet bowl or the cistern, run over it, swing it against the concrete floor of a porch, use a medium claw hammer in order to bash it open to check it for candiosity, fire it from the cannoñata, drop it down the top of Mt. Erupto (I guess I've been watching the TV program "Viva Piñata" too much again - candiosity is usually checked with a laser-type device on a platform with a large readout (located at Piñata Central), with a handheld wand that Langston Lickatoad uses, or with a pack-of-cards-sized device that Fergy Fudgehog uses; the cannoñata (also located at Piñata Central) is only used to shoot piñatas to piñata parties away from picturesque Piñata Island, and Mt. Erupto is an active volcano on Piñata Island {In the episode "Les Saves the Day...Again", Paulie Preztail says "Hey, ever wonder why this park's called 'Mount Erupto' anyway?", then Franklin Fizzlybear says "I think its an old native term. Means 'very safe.'"}), send it to the Daystrom Institute for additional analyses, or inflict upon it punishments that flashlights may have inflicted upon them.
Because it does not belong to me, I would not have performed any destructive tests on it regardless of what type of product it was.
The HappyLight® Deluxe uses an electronic ballast with Flicker Elimination Technology™ to assure "no-buzz" operation and instant-on, flicker-free illumination. The unit is advertised to offer Up to 10,000 LUX of Natural Spectrum® daylight.
Replacement bulbs are available for this product: part number CFL36VLX2 at a cost of $49.95 for a set of two bulbs (a complete "feeding" for the HappyLight® Deluxe unit).
"Beam" photograph on the test target at 12".
Photograph was deliberately left uncropped so that the wide flood could be seen.
That shadow at the lower right was not produced by the unit itself, and may safely be ignored.

The spot at left-center that queered the test is a defect in
the ProMetric's imager that can't be compensated for.
TEST NOTES:
Test unit was loaned to me by my sister for a very brief period on the morning of 12-14-10 (or "14 Dec. 2010" if you prefer), then was returned to her custody. Therefore, that dreadful "" icon will appear next to its listings on this website at once, denoting that I no longer have the product at my disposal for future comparisons or analyses.
