SORAA VIVID 2 MR16 LAMP
Soraa Vivid 2 MR16 Lamp, retail $~38.00* (www.soraa.com/products/vivid)
Manufactured by Soraa (www.soraa.com/)
Last updated 11-10-13
The Vivid 2 MR16 Lamp is a drop-in replacement for the existing halogen MR16 lamps.
What makes this lamp different from others is that it uses a GaN-on-GaN (gallium nitride-on-gallium nitride) violet LED to pump a mixture of three phosphors instead of a GaN-on Al2O3 (gallium nitride-on-artificial sapphire) blue LED pumping two phosphors. This results in a light that fills the spectrum gaps inherent in traditional white LED lamps -- doing things this way gives a more natural, lifelike color to anything irradiated with this lamp's light.
The color temperature is 2,700K and its CRI (color rendering index) is an incredible 95!

To use the Soraa Vivid 2 MR16 Lamp, simply remove the existing halogen lamp from the existing MR16 fixture, and replace it with the Soraa Vivid 2 MR16 Lamp.
Yes, it's really that easy.
All you need to be aware of is that this lamp requires an AC (alternating current) voltage, not DC (direct current). No harm will befall the lamp if you accidentally power it from DC, but it will appear defective -- that is, it will come on for approximately 0.2 seconds (~200ms) and then turn back off and stay off.
This product does not use batteries, so I don't have to tell you which part to remove, fly to Hollywood to get ground up into microscopic bits for the sake of some phoney-bologna Halloween movie, and then rather emphatically tell you not to.
Current usage measures 1.232A at 12VAC.
This is a replacement lamp, not a flashlight meant to be thrashed, trashed, and abused. So I won't try to drown it in the toliet tank, bash it against a steel rod or against the concrete floor of a carport in effort to try and expose the bare Metalmarineangemon - er - the bare Metaltrailmon - um that's not it either...the bare Metalsusanoomon...er...uh...wait a sec here...THE BARE METAL (guess I've been watching too much Digimon again! - now I'm just making {vulgar term for feces} up!!!), let my mother's big dog's ghost, her kitties, my kitty or my sister's kitty cat piddle (uranate) on it, hose it down with my mother's gun, run over it with a 450lb Quickie Pulse 6 motorised wheelchair, stomp on it, use a medium ball peen hammer in order to bash it open to check it for candiosity, fire it from the cannoņata, drop it down the top of Mt. Erupto (now I guess I've been watching the TV program "Viva Piņata" too much again - candiosity is usually checked with a laser-type device on a platform with a large readout (located at Piņata Central {aka. "Party Central"}), with a handheld wand that Langston Lickatoad uses, or with a pack-of-cards-sized device that Fergy Fudgehog uses; the cannoņata (also located at Piņata Central) is only used to shoot piņatas to piņata parties away from picturesque Piņata Island, and Mt. Erupto is an active volcano on Piņata Island), send it to the Daystrom Institute for additional analyses, or perform other indecencies on it that a flashlight might have to have performed on it. Therefore, this section of the Soraa Vivid 2 MR16 Lamp's web page will seem a bit more bare than this section of the web page on a page about a flashlight.
The advantages of this lamp over other MR16 LED retrofit bulbs are:
- Uses a violet LED pump and a triple phosphor downconversion, which results in a more complete spectrum over traditional blue-pumped YAG phosphor white LED lamps. Renders objects with a more natural color; the "gaps" in the violet, blue-green, and deep red inherent in traditional white LEDs have been filled.
- This lamp has an amazingly high CRI of 95 -- read the bullet point directly above to see what this means for you!
- Single-emitter design results in a "cleaner" light without multiple shadows.
- The "Origami" electronic driver circuit, designed with components used in automotive and other extreme temperature environments, can tolerate and dissipate significantly more heat than other LED lamps.
- This lamp is dimmable; with most other LED lamps, dimming is a rather severe no-no!
- Listed for use in damp locations (it is not submersible, but its use in a humid environment that would kill most other LED lamps is kosher).
Beam terminus photograph on the test target at 12".
Measures 13,277,000mcd on a Amprobe LM631A light meter.
You need a rather expen$ive instrument called an integrating sphere to measure light in lumens, and I neither own nor have access to one.

I don't have ready access to bowls of fruit or other colorful organic materials to furnish that type of photo, sorry.

Spectrographic analysis of the LED in this lamp.
Spectrographic analysis of the LED in this lamp; spectrometer's response narrowed to a band between 410nm and 420nm to pinpoint native emission peak wavelength, which is 414.640nm.
Spectrographic analysis of the LED in this lamp; spectrometer's response narrowed to a band between 615nm and 635nm to pinpoint phosphor emission peak wavelength, which is 623.020nm.
The raw spectrometer data (tab-delimited that can be loaded into Excel) is at http://ledmuseum.candlepower.us/44/soraa1.txt

A beam cross-sectional analysis would normally appear here, but the computer that hosted the ProMetric 8 Beam Cross-Sectional Analyser was destroyed by a lightning strike in July 2013 (the monitor had this big-ass hole blown right through its viewscreen); although a replacement computer is already en route, there's a fairly significant chance that the beam cross-sectional analyser itself was also wiped out because both the computer & test
instrument shared the AC power at the same outlet on the same power strip.
TEST NOTES:
Test unit was sent by Soraa.com on 10-03-13 and was received on 10-09-13.
It took some time to get on my website because I had to locate and purchase a transformer that had an AC output at 12 volts and could source the current necessary for proper lamp operation -- powering this lamp from DC is simply not possible.
UPDATE: 00-00-00
PROS:
Extremely bright considering that it uses but one LED emitter!
Warm white color is extremely pleasing to the eye
NEUTRAL:
Price is a bit high, but not exorbitantly so
Runs a bit warm, but it was designed to handle heat well
Requires AC and not DC; but I suspect that most MR16 lighting installations have AC transformers so this is very probably a moot point
CONS:
None that I've yet to discover
