BLAST'N FLASH

The Blast'N Flash is a rubber or rubber-like plastic ball that emits a brief light show and sound show anytime it is thrown against or is bounced against a hard surface.

I bought it because I was attracted to the red and blue LEDs in it. This is after all, a website about things that emit light, so it seemed only fair.

I was not able to find this product on the Wallgreens website, which is why I have nou furnished you with a URL.

 SIZE

The Blast'N Flash is ready to use as soon as you remove it from the netting "bag" it comes in.

Anytime the ball strikes a hard surface (such as it would if it were bounced), the ball flashes its red & blue LEDs and emits one of eight sounds for approximately 1.4 seconds. After every eighth activation, the ball will flash and emit sounds for approximately 6 seconds.

There is no power switch to forget about.

This appears to be a disposable product; there is no obvious way to change the batteries; and I don't even know what size/style of cells it uses.

This product is SPECIFICALLY INTENDED to be thrown at and bounced from hard surfaces, so durability should not be an issue here.

This product is meant to be used as a child's toy, not as a flashlight meant to be used, thrashed, trashed, and abused. So I won't try to flush it down the toilet, bash it against a steel rod or against the corner of a concrete stair, let my ex-housemate's kitty's ghost pee on it, run over it with a 400lb Rascal, or perform other indecencies that a regular flashlight might have to go through. So this part of the web page will appear more bare than this part of the web page on a web page about a flashlight.

The Blast'N Flash appears water-resistant; possily even submersible to shallow depths as well. So you need not be concerned to hand it to the kids and let them use it outdoors in rainy weather.

Since this product is intended to be disposable, I cannot in good conscience award it a full five stars when I assign a rating to it. But it does appear to be reasonably durable and well-constructed, so it will probably earn about as high a rating as I can award to any disposable product.

Photograph of the ball, illuminated of course.

Quicktime movie (.mov extension) showing the Blast'N Flash ball in action.
This is 2.3 megabytes (2,567,064) in length; dial-up users please be aware.
It will take no less than ten five minutes to load at 48.0Kbps.
I cannot provide it in other formats, so please do not ask.

TEST NOTES:
Test unit was purchased at Wallgreens inm Seattle on the morning of 04-14-06.

Product was made in China. A product's country of origin really does matter to some people, which is why I published it on this web page.
