ENERGIZER ''FIND ME'' FLASHLIGHT

Energizer ''Find Me'' Flashlight, retail $7.99 (www.wallgreens.com...)
Manufactured by Energizer Battery Company (www.energizer.com)

The Energizer "Find Me" Flashlight is a good looking household incandescent flashlight in a transparent blue plastic case. It comes with the batteries installed, so the red "find me" LED is already blinking, presumably so the customer will be attracted to it in the store rack.

The case may be red or some other color; the one I purchased came in a blue case.

 SIZE

The flashlight comes ready to use as soon as you remove it from the package (use scissors or a sharp knife to do so), the "battery freshness seal" (a cardboard tab) is removed from under the switch., and the red label reminding you to remove this tab is removed from the lens.

Press the button on the barrel until it clicks and then release it to turn the flashlight on. Press and release it the same way again to turn the flashlight off. This is continuous or hands-free mode.

There is no momentary or signalling mode available when the flashlight is off, however, you can blink the flashlight while it is on by partially depressing the button. If you don't mind the backward or reverse feeling of this, you can blink the flashlight this way.

A red LED in the barrel approximately 1" in front of the switch blinks approximately once every four seconds (~0.25Hz) when the flashlight is off. This allows you to find it in the dark.

To feed baby, unscrew and remove the bezel, throw it in the {vulgar term for feces}bowl, yank that silver handle in the front of the cistern down, and flush it away...O WAIT!!! YOU'LL NEED THAT!!! So just set it aside instead.

Tip the two used D cells out of the barrel and into your hand, and dispose of or recycle them as you see fit.

Insert two new D cells into the barrel, flat-end (-) negative first. Screw the bezel back on, and be done with it.
Aren't you glad you didn't flush away that bezel now?

Because this flashlight uses an incandescent bulb, better tell you how to change it when it blows out.

Unscrew and remove the bezel, and set it aside. Throw the barrel in the {vulgar term for feces}bowl, yank that silver handle in the front of the cistern down, and flush it away...O WAIT!!! YOU'LL NEED THAT!!! So just set it aside instead.

On the underside of the bezel, look for a black plastic thing with a silver colored platform on it. Pull it straight out of the reflector; it may be on there pretty good, so don't be afraid to reef on it if necessary. Once you have it off, set it aside. Remove the burnt out bulb, and throw it in the garbage can. Light bulbs are not recyclable; that's why I did not offer that option here.

Insert a new KPR-102 bulb into the opening in the back of the reflector for it; glass-end first. Place that black plastic cylinder back on, and press down on it until it snaps into place. Finally, screw the bezel back on the barrel.
Aren't you glad you didn't flush away that barrel now?

(Edit 03-05-05): The "Find Me" LED circuitry is connected in series with the bulb, so if the bulb is burned out, the "Find Me" LED will not blink.

The "Find Me" flashlight seems reasonably durable at very minimum, but because of its all-plastic construction, I won't do the smack test on it. It would almost certainly become broken if I did.
And I don't just want to throw away a perfectly good eight dollars.
Unless Energizer or some retailer wants to send one specifically for this test, it won't be done.

Water-resistance appears negligible at best. There is no O-ring sealing the bezel and the barrel; and the bezel does not fit on the barrel really tightly. The switch area leaks rather readily too, as proven by that dreadful suction test. So please try not to drop it in creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes, oceansides, docksides, puddles of Simese cat pee, slush piles, mud puddles, tubs, toilet bowls, cisterns, sinks, fishtanks, dog water dishes, or other places where water or water-like liquids might be found. A little rain or snow probably wouldn't hurt it though, so you need not be too concerned about using it in lightly to at best moderately bad weather.

If it fell in water and you suspect it got flooded, disassemble it as you would for a battery change, dump out the water if necessary, and set the parts in a warm dry place for a day or so just to be sure it's completely dry inside before you reassemble and use it again.

If it fell into seawater or if somebody or something peed on it, douche all the parts out with fresh water before setting them out to dry. You don't want your flashlight to smell like seaweed or pee when you go to use it next. Besides, salt (from seawater or tinkle) can't be very good for the insides.

The light produced by this flashlight is unexpectedly yellowish, but it's not useless by any means. Not by any means.

This flashlight's main feature is that blinking red "find me" LED on the barrel in front of the switch. It blinks approximately once every four seconds (~0.25Hz) whenever the flashlight is off. It also serves to let you know the bulb is still good; it will not blink with a blown-out lamp or no lamp installed.

The package indicates this LED will blink for five years on the same set of batteries. I believe this is to battery depletion, so the actual flashlight may not function well after that long on the same set of batteries.

TEST NOTES:
Test unit was purchased from Wallgreens on 02-05-05.

UPDATE: 01-19-06
The batteries in my Find Me flashlight are deader than doorknobs; so the battery life of 5 years as stated on the package is grossly inaccurate.
