SCILUX LUMINARY LIGHT BASE

Scilux Luminary Light Base, retail $34 (www.scilux.com...)
Manufactured by Scilux (www.scilux.com)
Last updated 11-06-09

The Scilux CB02 Luminary Art Glass Light Base (hereinafter, called a "light base") is a 4" diameter round disk finished in a beautiful polished ebony wood finish. O, did I say the word "finish" twice in one sentence?

It has a Nichia power LED in the center (for lighting objects you place on top of the unit), and it's powered by a 4.5 volts DC "wall wart" AC adapter.

The light base is designed for you to place transparent or translucent objects on, which are then illuminated from the bottom by the high powered LED in the base itself.

 SIZE

The light base is easy to use. No, really, it is!!!

Just plug the plug on the end of the AC adapter's cord into the receptacle for it on the side of the light base, and plug the adapter itself into any standard 2- or 3-prong United States AC outlet. This adapter is designed to run from 110-130 volts AC, so if you live in an area supplied by 100VAC or 220-240VAC, please use the correct transformer so the AC adapter receives 110-130 volts AC.

Place the light base on a stable, flat, level surface; and place the piece you wish to be illuminated on top of the base, as close to center as you can. You don't have to be exact in positioning the object; just eyeball it.

There, that's all there is to it.

Because this product is specifically designed to run on 110-130 volts AC household current, this section can and will be skipped.

Because this is a household lamp and not a flashlight, the punishments I bestow upon flashlights will not be bestowed upon the Scilux Light Base. So this section of the web page will be significantly more bare than this section of the web page on a page about a flashlight.

Just place a transparent or translucent glass or plastic object on the light base, and let it do all the rest of the work.
The object you place on the light base will then be lit from below, which is a very gorgeous effect.

This product uses a Nichia power LED as its light source, and as a result, runs much, much, MUCH cooler than a light base that uses an incandescent light blub. So yes, you can place PLASTIC objects on it and they won't melt, become deformed, or even become hot enough to attract baby funnel web spiders, mosquito wrigglers (larvae), or sphinx moth caterpillars (larvae)...I mean...start an unwanted fire.

Photograph of an "Electron Spark" Lichtenburg figure,
intended specifically to be used with this light base.

Although this was included with the test unit, it is not
included with units you can buy unless you order it seperately.
If you want one, please order it from http://teslamania.delete.org....
Look for Style #13 on the page, and expect to pay $45 plus $5 S&H for it.

TEST NOTES:
Sample of the light base plus the Electron Spark figure were sent by Scilux, and were received on the afternoon of 12-24-04. What a neat Christmas present, thank you!!!

The AC adapter is rated to output 4.5 volts DC at 500mA.
The polarity of the plug is center (+) positive, barrel (-) negative.

UPDATE: 12-27-04
I have decided to rate this product five stars and place it in The Trophy Case.

UPDATE: 01-08-07
It would appear that this company has gone down the drain; I've heard of several recent instances of "no contact" and just now, I tried going to their website, and that website is now offline.
I have heard from somebody that has been in contact with the proprieter of this business that a personal tragedy might have been the cause of Scilux's closing.

I do not know where you can obtain a similar product, so please do not ask.

UPDATE: 08-29-07
You can now get similar LED light bases ("LED light stages") at Kaleidoscope Designs.

PROS:
Bright LED - uplights objects very well
Does not become hot in operation, thanks to that LED
Nice looking exterior casing; should not "clash" with most decorating schemes

CONS:
Not water-resistant - but it wasn't meant to be. Will not figure into my rating.
