If you ordered one of these things, chances are you're somebody who knows what they're doing. The VersaLux ULM (Utility Light Module) is a pre-wired circuit board with 10 intense white Nichia LEDs on it, along with a sophisticated power regulator that allows you to connect it to any type of DC power you can get your hands on, provided it is at least 2.2 volts and no higher than 13.8 volts. The brightness of the LEDs is infinitely adjustable from 1% to 100% simply by turning a dial.
NOTE: It is wholly up to you to find or make a protective case for the VersaLux and any stand-alone power source you may wish to use it with.
The VersaLux comes ready to hook up right out of the box. Because it, like virtually all electronic circuits are static sensitive, it comes in a conductive baggie, and you should excersize static-safe handling procedures when working with the VersaLux. This is normally accomplished by using conductive foam work surfaces and grounded wrist straps; however if you don't own anything like that, just keeping your bare feet resting against grounded metal while handling the circuit should be sufficient if you're careful.
The VersaLux has two wires coming off it. The red one is the positive, while the black one is the negative. Connecting these wires to any source of DC from 2.2 to 13.8 volts will cause the circuit to spring to life.
At the lowest setting or off; the circuit draws 1.59 milliamps at 12 volts, and 0.82 milliamps at 3.8 volts.
At the highest setting (100%) the circuit draws 84 milliamps at 12 volts, and 174.4 milliamps at 3.8 volts.
The circuit works more efficiently at higher voltages, but can still produce full output all the way down to around 4 volts, and then it starts to fall off.
Maximum current draw (205mA) appears to occur at ... damn, I'm out of meter leads. I'll have to come back and do this when I get another set so I can meter voltage and current at the same time.
You can adjust the brightness of the 10 LEDs by turning that dial with the slot & arrow in it. Brightness is infinitely adjustable from 1% to 100%. Nothing happens when you peg the dial past 100%, and the LEDs turn off if you go below 1%.
