The Coleman® 4xAA Pack Away® Lantern (hereinafter, probably just called a, "lantern") is an LED lantern that features a Luxeon I LED protected by a water-clear pastic dome; four AA cells in its body feed that LED.

There are two intensity levels and a "signalling" (flash) mode available from a pushbutton on the top of the unit.

 SIZE

To use the lantern, feed it with the included Duracell AA cells first (see directly below), and then you'll be ready to go camping.

Pull the two halves of the lantern apart so that the transparent "globe" is now exposed.

On the top of the unit, there is a pushbutton switch. Press it once for "high" mode, press it again for "low" mode, press it again for "flash" mode, and press it a fourth time to neutralise the lantern

When you're ready to pack up & leave, press the two halves of the lantern back together; this serves three purposes:
  1. It decreases the overall size of the unit.
  2. It protects the lantern's "globe" from scratches, abrasions, and dirt.
  3. It turns & locks the lantern "off" so that the batteries do not become drained.

To change the batteries in your lantern, turn the unit upside-down, and rotate the thumbscrew counterclockwise (as if loosening it), lift the battery door away, gently place it on the ground, and kick it into the moss & mushrooms so it will rot away...O WAIT, YOU'LL NEED THAT!!! So just set it aside instead.

Tip the used AA cells out of the body and into your hand, and dispose of or recycle them as you see fit.

Insert four new AA cells in the body, orienting them so that the two compartments with springs in their bottoms have the AA cells inserted flat-end (-) negative first, and insert the two remaining AA cells into their compartments nipple-end (+) positive first.

Aren't you glad you didn't kick that battery door into the woods now?

Unable to measure current due to how the product was constructed.

This product comes in an all-plastic body, so "The Smack Test" would really not be appropriate here.

The lantern is advertised to be waterproof and even submersible to shallpw depths for an unknown time (insomuch as where a fall into a shallow creek and fast retrival should not kill it), so using it in the rain or snow should be fine.

Since it is water-resistant but not smack-resistant, this section of the web page will be significantly more bare than this section of the web page on a page about a metal flashlight.

The light output by the lantern is a pure, very slightly cool white, with no pink, yellow, blue, purple, or "rotten porpoise urine green" tint to it.

Photograph of the lantern's output on the test target at ~20 inches.
Photograph was deliberately left uncropped to allow beam details to be visible.

Photograph of a room (dim. approx. 8 feet by 10 feet) illuminated solely by this lantern.
The lantern was placed on the top of the imager for my ProMetric 8 Beam Cross-Sectional Analyser located above and to the left of the camera.

TEST NOTES:
Test unit was purchased at a nearby Wall*Mart in Federal WEay WA. USA by my stepmother on 12-23-12. Since it doesn't belong to me, that dreadful, "" icon will appear appended to its listings on this website at once, denoting the fact that I do not have it in my custody for comparisons or additional analyses.
