The USB Notebook Computer Light is pretty much that - a USB keyboard light.

This is a product designed to light your laptop computer's keyboard, using any free USB port on that computer to power itself.

It clips to the top of your laptop's screen, and has a ball & socket joint so you can direct (aim) the light anywhere you need it. The cable length is 32" when the cable is fully extended.

I normally evaluate products sent by manufacturers and retailers *before* products that I purchased myself or that were sent by website visitors (like this product was), but I happened to have my laptop computer handy at the moment, so I broke with convention here.

 SIZE

To use the USB LED light, just plug it into any unused USB port on your computer, clip it to the top edge of your laptop's monitor (screen), and aim it where you want using the ball & socket joint on it. Yes, it really is as easy as that.

It comes with a lidded plastic storage case with a form-fitting foam liner; I was not able to figure out how to arrange the unit to fit this liner, so if it is removed, the unit can just be stuffed in the case any old way and you'll be able to close and latch the lid.

Since this product draws the power it needs directly from the USB port it plugs into, I don't have to tell you about any battery changing procedures.

This product is "hot swappable", meaning you don't have to power down the computer before plugging in or unplugging this device. This is fairly typical of USB devices, so no surprise there.

I cannot measure the current consumption without chopping the unit up, and if I did that, I'd probably end up wrecking it for good. But the published current usage values are <2mA during use, and 0.50ľA during sleep mode.

The USB LED light is designed to be a computer peripheral, not a flashlight meant to be carried around, thrashed, and abused, so I won't try to stomp on it with old or used bowling shoes, drown it in the crapper, slam it against the corner of a concrete stair or against a steel rod, run over it with a 400lb electric wheelchair, let my housemate's kitty cat's ghost go potty on it, or subject it to any other indecencies that a regular flashlight may have to endure.

Despite its delicate appearance, the USB keyboard light seems to be reasonably durable and well-made. You need not be concerned to just stuff it in its storage case any old way.

This light has a single wide-angle white LED in its head, and does a very good job at illuminating the surface it's aimed at.
It's a bit dimmer than other USB keyboard lights I've tested, but NOT unusably so.

TEST NOTES:
Test unit was sent by a fan of this website, and was received on 11-30-05.

Product was made in China. A product's country of origin really does matter to some people, which is why I published it on this web page.
