LED CHEVRON ARROW MAT

LED Chevron Arrow Mat, retail $38.50 (www.ledtronics.com...)

This is a very large (44.9" (114.0cm) long by 19.7" (50.0cm) tall) vinyl mat with four arrows (each lit by 9 bright red (4000-5000 mcd) LEDs). All the arrows don't just come on at once (well, if you don't want them that way; but you can select just such a mode!); see the movie clips farther down this web page.

This mat is very heavy vinyl, it has powerful magnets inside its edges so you can "stick" it to cars or trucks; it also has brass grommets (eyelets) so you can hang it kind of like a flag.

The mat has three modes (not counting "off").
They are:

1: Sequential flashing (where each arrow flashes in sequence - this is the default mode when you turn the mat on).
2: Unison flashing (where all four arrows flash at the same time).
3: Steady on (where all four arrows stay continuously lit).

The mat comes with a generously-sized carrying/storage bag with handles and a Velcro lid, so you can store the mat pretty much anywhere and carry it to an accident scene or what have you and deploy it rapidly. The bag helps to keep the mat clean and protects it from damage whenever it is not being used. The mat folds up to fit inside this bag; it can be folded or rolled up when you don't have the bag handy; no need to keep it fully open in this case.

SIZE (yes, that's my foot here - the mat is too large to show my hand!)

Electrically, to turn it on, follow these three easy steps:

1: Look on the back of the mat for a Velcro-lidded pocket. Lift the lid, and carefully remove the battery box. Don't pull on it too hard; or else you might bust the wires connecting it with the rest of the mat - and you'll be screwed if you did that!
2: On its upper surface, you'll find a slide switch. Slide this switch to the "ON" position (toward the edge of the box).
3: Place the battery box back in the pocket, and close the lid.

There is a small pushbutton switch on the front face of the mat, just to the left of arrow #3 (as the arrows are pointing left). Press & release this switch to access the following modes:

1: Sequential flashing (where each arrow flashes in sequence - this is the default mode when you turn the mat on).
2: Unison flashing (where all four arrows flash at the same time).
3: Steady on (where all four arrows stay continuously lit).

To neutralise it, open the lid of the Velcro-lidded pocket. Carefully remove the battery box, and slide that switch to the "OFF" position (away from the edge of the box), and stow the battery box back in the pocket.

The mat can be deployed in two ways:
1: You can "stick" it to any relatively flat ferrous (magnetic) surface like the side or back of a car or truck using the magnets embedded inside the edges of the mat.
2: You can hang it like a "flag" by tying thin ropes through the grommets (eyelets) along the mat's perimeter (edges).

There are eight magnets, and eight brass eyelets.

To change the batteries, turn the mat over. On one end, you'll find a pocket with a velcro lid. Lift the velcro lid up, and remove the battery box. Don't reef on it too hard, or you might break the wires connecting it with the rest of the mat, and you'll be S.O.L. if you did that.

Slide the lid off the battery box, and chuck it into the highway so that an 18-wheeler can run over & ruin it...O WAIT!!! YOU'LL NEED THAT!!! So just set it aside instead.

Remove the three dead batteries and dispose of or recycle them as you see fit.

Insert three new AA cells in the chambers, flat (-) side of each battery facing the spring in its chamber.

Replace the battery door, slip the battery box back in the pocket, and close the Velcro lid.
Aren't you glad you didn't huck that battery lid into the road now?

Current usage measures 180.2mA in steady-on mode.
I cannot obtain a reading in flash modes, because they're...well...FLASHING.

This is a safety mat, not a flashlight designed to be used everyday, thrashed, trashed, and abused. So I won't throw it against the wall, stomp on it, try to drown it in the {vulgar term for feces}bowl or the cistern, run over it, swing it against the concrete floor of a patio, bash it open to check it for candiosity, fire it from the cannoņata (I guess I've been watching the TV program "Viva Piņata" too much again - candiosity is usually checked with a laser-type device on a platform with a large readout or with a handheld wand used by Langston Lickatoad), send it to the Daystrom Institute for additional analysis, or inflict upon it punishments that flashlights may have inflicted upon them.
So this section of the safety mat's web page will seem a bit more bare than this section of the web page on a page about a flashlight that was born to be a flashlight and nothing but a flashlight.

The magnets are remarkably potent; the mat had no problems whatsoever stuck to the back of my sister's car, even though it only attached to the trunk by the magnets in its top edge.

The arrows are retroreflective; that is, even if the LEDs go out (you forgot to turn the mat on or the batteries have pooped out), they will still be highly visible in automobile headlights to the driver of that automobile.

The LEDs aren't just stuck through holes in the arrows; they're each covered by a transparent, water-clear plastic dome.

WMP movie (.avi extension) showing the product flashing.
This clip is approximately 5.6 megabytes (5,779,154 bytes) in length; dial-up users please be aware.
It will take no less than twenty minutes to load at 48.0Kbps.
I cannot provide it in other formats, so please do not ask.

That music you might hear is from a demo I wrote for the Commodore 64 computer in 1992.
The demo's actual filename is a toliet word, so I cannot say it here. It starts with "PU" and ends with "ED".
Think of a kitty cat being flogged with a long flexible instrument used for administering a beating and you can probably figure it out.

TEST NOTES:
Product was sent by J.P. of LEDTronics on 08-30-07 and was received on the afternoon of 09-26-07.

As far as I am able to determine, product was made in the United States.
A product's country of origin really does matter to some people, which is why I published it on this web page.
